New Images and a Poster of Broadway’s “Anastasia” Were Just Released

Fans of the original 1997 animated film Anastasia have been looking forward to either a live film update to the original movie, or a stage musical. Well, fans will get one of their wishes granted, since Anastasia is set to open on the Great White Way next year.

New promotional images of the stage version of Anastasia have have just been released.

One image shows Christy Altomare as Anastasia holding out her arms and singing with the Eiffel Tower behind her. Another shows Derek Klena, who plays Dmitry, singing to Anastasia in Saint Petersburg. And a third picture seems show the famous “Once Upon a December” scene from the original movie where Anastasia recalls her dim memories of a regal Russian gathering.

All three of these images come from the Hartford Stage production of Anastasia, which is the version that will be brought to Broadway. Indeed, Anastasia did so well at the Hartford Stage in Connecticut that it sold out for almost every performance. This record-breaking world premiere goes down in the Hartford Stage’s history, and it marks one of the most successful musical premieres in decades. There are very high expectations surrounding this show, and if the reviews from the Hartford Stage critics are any indication, it will live up to the hype when it arrives on Broadway.

Terrence McNally wrote the book for this stage adaptation of the film, and the famous composer/lyricist duo of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens teamed up to work on the score yet again. There will be a revamped score for this Broadway musical, as well as all the classic songs from this original film like “Journey to the Past” and “Learn to Do It.”

Anastasia follows the adventures of the titular youngest daughter of the last Tsar of Russia. Anastasia has forgotten almost all of her past, but with the help of a few conmen she slowly discovers the truth about her identity. And, of course, she falls in love along the way.

The official poster for this musical was also released by Broadway producers. It shows Anastasia running on a bridge with Saint Petersburg’s Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood on the left and the Eiffel Tower on the right.

This musical is set open for previews on March 23rd of 2017 at the Broadhurst Theater. It will officially open on April 24th of 2017.
