In a story recently aired by SproutNews (http://www.12newsnow.com/story/31366182/avi-weisfogel-dds-launches-gofundme-campaign-set-up-to-benefit-operation-smile), it was announced that New Jersey dentist Avi Weisfogel has initiated a charity campaign through GoFundMe to fund Operation Smile. At the launch of the campaign, Dr.Weisfogel announced that his goal was $2000 in funding to aid the globally-active organization. GoFundMe is a crowdfunding site that allows individuals to initiate calls for support for and to contribute online to a variety of causes.
Initiated in the Philippines in 1982, Operation Smile is a non-profit organization devoted to correcting facial deformities caused by cleft palate and cleft palate. These birth defects are relatively common, but are easily corrected by simple facial surgery procedures. However, in many third-world countries, families do not have access to such medical interventions, with the result that many children have to learn to live with a deformity that isolates and alienates them. To rectify this situation, Operation Smile has not only provided more than a quarter of a million free surgeries to young people in more than sixty countries around the world.
But it’s also a cause dear to Avi Weisfogel’s heart. Since earning his DDS at the New York University School of Dentistry, Dr. Weisfogel has, in addition to establishing a highly successful dental practice in Old Bridge, New Jersey and garnering numerous awards for dental excellence, emerged as a leading authority on how the structure of a person’s jaw, teeth, and throat can affect one’s sleep. Weisfogel now heads several organizations devoted to treating sleep apnea, and is active in educating other dentists in technics to treat sleep disorders through oral appliances and other means. Through his generous support of Operation Smile, Avi Weisfogel is promoting a cause that truly resonates with his own contributions to dental science.
