The refugee and migration crisis is changing the social structure of the planet. Europe is in the middle of one the most important migration period in recorded history on Biography, and the leaders of the nations that are faced with thousands of refugees don’t know how to handle them. In Turkey, refugee camps at setup to hold thousands of migrants, and the quality of life in those camps is non-existent. Disease, malnutrition, and sickness are the flavors of the day, and each day those flavors get worse. Other countries have stepped up and are accepting immigrants, but the system to handle people that speak a different language and have different religious beliefs is totally inadequate in most countries.
But one person is hell-bent on helping refugees start a new life, and his name is George Soros. George Soros is a former refugee. He escaped Nazi-occupied Hungary in 1947, so he knows what it feels like to be an outcast. But Soros, the former refugee, is now Soros, the billionaire. Soros has a net worth of more than $32 billion, and that number grows by the hour. But Soros doesn’t hoard his wealth. He gives it away. George started his Open Society Foundation in 1976. That was the year that Soros was called “the man that broke the Bank of England,” when he bet the pound would be devalued because of the introduction of the euro. Soros made $1 billion on that bet, and his hedge fund made $7 billion. Instead of putting all of that money in other investments, Soros decided to promote democracy in countries that don’t know the meaning of the word. Today, the Soros Open Society Foundation has organizations in more than 130 countries.
When the migration issue first became a crisis in Europe, Soros offered EU leaders a solution for the crisis, but they didn’t listen to him. So instead of giving up, George Soros decided to invest $500 million in businesses started by refugees or companies that offer products and services to refugees, according to an article published by CNN news. The investment in those business ventures will be handled by Soros nonprofit organizations. Refugees need cell phones and Internet services. They need food, shelter and an education and all of those things are vital to starting a new life in foreign countries that have nationalistic ideas.
George Soros is managing his family hedge fund again. He invested in the gold market recently and that investment is paying off. But he thinks his best investment is the $500 million he has earmarked for refugees. The gift that keeps on giving is the gift of paying it forward, and Soros has a history of paying his net worth forward. See: http://www.cnbc.com/george-soros/
George Soros was recently profiled in an article for CNBC. Soros issued strong words of caution on https://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/people/george-soros regarding the European Union (EU) and its stance on the current refugee crisis. Soros warned that if the leaders of the EU do not act cooperatively soon to address the EU crisis, then the entire region could be headed towards disaster. George Soros explained that the asylum seekers are incredibly desperate right now and that the numbers of refugees fleeing their civil warn torn home countries is on the rise. Soros penned an essay for the New York Review of Books in which he estimated that the EU should be prepared to absorb each year between 300,000 and 500,000 refugees. The estimated financial toll that this surge in refugee numbers will exact on the EU could be an estimated $34 billion annually, according to George Soros. Although Soros recognized that this number can seem staggering, the longer term consequences of not adequately preparing to deal with the refugee crisis could be much higher for the EU. In response to questions about where the budget for the refugee crisis should come from, George Soros pointed to the European Commission’s Multi annual Financial Framework and the triple-A credit rating of the EU, which he implored should be utilized immediately to surge funding for this crisis.
Soros has a long history of standing up for the rights of immigrants on http://www.nybooks.com/articles/2016/02/11/europe-verge-collapse-interview/ and speaking out in times of humanitarian crisis. Ever since he founded the Open Society Foundations, Soros has been widely recognized as a strong advocate for human rights and economic development in the poorest and most marginalized corners of the world. Given his personal history of growing up in Budapest, Hungary during the Nazi occupation of World War II, George Soros has a unique perspective on the importance of protecting immigrants’ rights. He has been extremely generous in his philanthropic contributions to a variety of causes supporting human rights, freedom of speech, economic and business development, inclusion and integration. Soros was one of the strongest supporters of ending apartheid in South Africa through his generous contributions to provide educational opportunities to black students.
Soros also serves as the chair of Soros Fund Management and is widely consulted for his perspective on investment advice. Soros is particularly knowledgeable about international financial markets and recognizing global trends. He has written over a dozen books on various topics ranging from economic and politics to social issues. He also is a frequent contributor to other print publications, including highly respected newspapers all over the world. Soros continues to take a very active role in political life through his financial contributions to a variety of progressive and liberal causes as well as frequent appearances and speaking engagements on political issues.
The world is changing at a rapid rate, and it needs good people to help others. Philanthropy is absolutely vital to the future of this country. Successful businessmen and women must come together, recognize issues in their community, and offer their support. For years, hundreds of successful charities have solved problems that no one believed could be fixed. Michigan has hundreds of great business people that are proud to live in this great state. These business people have gladly given to the many causes that concern the state. One of the greatest businessmen in Detroit is Dick DeVos, he has built a major empire, and he is now giving back to the community that has given him so much.
Glad to see the Grand Rapids area make another “best of” list! Thank you all for your role in making our city great.

Dick DeVos was born in Michigan. He remembers his childhood home in Grand Rapids fondly and from an early age, he was invested in the family business, Amway. He remembered having a great sense of camaraderie with the workers at Amway, and he was fascinated with the way the business works. He worked hard in school and earned his place at Northwood University. Dick DeVos worked hard throughout his four years, and when he came back to Michigan he was ready to join the business community.
Dick loved his time at Amway, but he wanted to make his own mark. In the early nineties, he began working as president of the Orlando Magic. He worked there two years and helped establish the team as a major entertainment option for people in Central Florida. After two years he returned to Amway as President. The company flourished in the nineties thanks to his leadership. Amway became Alticor during this time, and in 2002, he retired.
Dick DeVos is proud of his success in the business community, but he wanted to give back. Dick started The Dick and Betsy Devos Family Foundation. This foundation actively seeks out great causes in the Michigan area. Every year, they process more than five hundred requests for support. These requests cover a wide range of needs, and the foundation is happy to give. Dick has accomplished many great things in the business world, but he is most proud of his philanthropic work.
Michigan is a beautiful place, but it needs good people to stand up for the community. For several decades, Dick DeVos has led the charge to help those that need it most.
