New Clinical Trial Shows Promise For Multiple Sclerosis Remissions

A clinical trial conducted by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) shows a great deal of promise for the long-term remission of multiple sclerosis. The trial used high-dose immunosuppressive therapy that was followed up by transplanting the patient’s own blood-forming stem cells back into their bodies. This resulted in 69% of the patients taking part in the study experiencing no new brain lesions or other relapses in their disease. Also of importance, none of the participants in the study took any MS medications.

This way of treating multiple sclerosis could be a breakthrough as it was much more effective than currently available MS drugs. The Director of the NIAID, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said that results were very encouraging and his agency was already planning a larger, randomized trial to confirm the results. The principal investigator of the trial, Dr. Richard Nash, said that further evaluation of this method of treating MS is warranted and if a larger study confirms the findings then it will become the best option for sufferers of the disease.
