Legendary Rock crooner Jimmy Buffett is heading to Broadway. The musical Escape to Margaritaville set to the title of his 1977 smash hit, is slated to hit the Broadway stage in early 2018, according to singer’s website.
The musical will kick off a six-week run at the La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, California. That premier will be followed up a three-city pre-Broadway stint in New Orleans, Houston and Chicago. At the end of the three-city tour on Dec. 3, the show will head to an unspecified Broadway venue.
Buffett stated that it has always been a goal of his to make it to Broadway, according to a post on his website. “I am very excited about this tour, which kicks off in La Jolla,” said Buffett. “After performing in three of my favorite cities — New Orleans, Houston and Chicago, we’ll head back to New York.”
Escape to Margaritaville is based on an original story with collaborations from My Name is Earl writer Greg Garcia and writer/actor Mike O’Malley. Christopher Ashley, veteran of several Broadway productions, will serve as director. Buffett says that he has no doubt that the musical is in very capable hands and should be a rousing success.
Playbill gave a full synopsis of the production as imagining “a warm and beautiful place set by the ocean where the music plays and the drinks are in abundance.”
“Margaritaville is an island paradise where all of your dreams come true. It’s a place where city dwellers can get away from it all, and the locals bring their own brand of harmless trouble, according to Buffett. The story is a romantic tell of an island bartender and part-time singer, Sully, who thinks he has the world all figured out. He does, until a beautiful, strong-minded tourist enters his life and changes his life forever.
Tour dates and ticket information can be found on Buffett’s website. There is also a 30-second video promo.
