Producers of the upcoming Broadway show Anastasia announced June 28 that the Disney-inspired musical will open April 2017. The production will star Christy Altomare as Anya. Critics and theater fans are already buzzing about the announcement.
Although the show hasn’t even opened yet, people on social media are already on the edge of their seats for the release date of the cast album. The show is popular with people who grew up on the 1997 Disney movie. Many of the same classic songs are sung in the musical.
People from all over the world traveled to see the musical during its run at Hartford Stage. That performance also starred Christy Altomare as Anya.
“In Hartford, we saw people ages 8-100 travel from all over the world to enjoy Anastasia’s enduring story,” the producers told Entertainment Weekly.
The Broadway musical Anastasia is produced by Tony award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.
According to Playbill, the musical is billed as a “romantic, adventure-filled story of a brave young woman attempting to discover the mystery of her past.”
Like the 1997 Disney movie by the same name, Anastasia is set during the final days of the Russian Empire. Anastasia, the only surviving daughter of the Romanov family, embraces a con artist in her journey to discover the details of her mysterious past.
Derek Klena is already cast to play the character of Dmitry. He will be reprising the same role he played as part of the Hartford Stage cast alongside Christy Altomare.
Anastasia will open April 24, 2017 at Broadhurst Theatre. People can buy tickets in the fall.
