Betsy DeVos has been involved with education reform for many years which began with her time in college. She became very active in campus politics during that time which turned into over thirty years of fighting for a better political landscape with special attention to providing the best education possible for low-income or impoverished families. She began her career early on with affiliation with the Michigan Republican Party where she served on several political action committees. She has continued her work through a variety of entities and non-profit groups such as the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. She is also the Chairman of the Windquest Group wich invests in a variety of interests such as clean energy and technology. She is one of the co-founders of Windquest Group which was created along with her husband Dick DeVos in 1989. Her husband is the former President of both the Orlando Magic NBA team and franchise as well as the former President of the Amway company. Her interest in philanthropy and non-profit organizations has led her to work with children and children’s advocacy groups extensively. She is the Founder of the Foundation for Excellence in Education and is a leading force behind the educational choice program. In addition, she serves as the Chairman of AFC or the American Federation for Children as well as the Alliance for School Choice. Some of her other non-profit involvement includes being a board member for the Institue of Arts Management at the Kenedy Center, Kids Hope USA, and Mars Hill Bible Church.
Betsy DeVos focuses much of her attention on the Grand Rapids area in Michigan where they are involved to a great degree with the socio-economic aspect of the area including education and community programs to help underprivileged families that are trying to better their lives. One of the local schools in the Grand Rapids area that she focuses a great amount of attention is the Potter’s House Chrisitan School. She loves their approach to learning and how well the children respond to their curriculum and the overall environment that the children learn in at the school. They focus on teaching low-income children. She and her husband both are proponents of education and her husband was successfully elected to the State Board of Education for Michigan in 1990. Betsy Devos has given to date, in excess of $139 million to charity. The money was donated to a variety of causes including education and art. She is currently serving as the 11th Secretary of Education for the United States. She was elected to the office on January 17, 2017. She was born in Holland, Michigan on January 8, 1958, to Edgar and Elsa Prince.
